Aphrodite Fritillary
Speyeria aphrodite

Observation date: August 25, 2022
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: One of these days I'm going to see this species, haha, and I know this isn't the Northwestern because it definitely has brownish eyes! Also based on habitat - very dry foothills / hillside - it seems Atlantis isn't as likely.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Very good...and correct ID. The Atlantis has blue-gray eyes also but...I have found in some photos, depending on light angle, aphrodite eyes can look blue-gray but other wing characters can be used to identify them. I see this one (a female) is feeding on Gayfeather...this is what Leonard's Skipper likes for a nectar source and its distribution is virtually the same as places where this plant is native. Mike
