Observation notes: Four or five individuals around. Perched on mud in area covered by sparse grassy vegetation at north end of lake. I set my camera down and one came to investigate yellow and black camera strap. Most had proboscis extended into mud. Would turn tail on me with wings folded presenting an almost invisible profile, then fly away in a more or less straight line if I got too close. Finally found one that relaxed, turned profile to the sun, slowly opening and closing its wings. Habitat: Mountain Lake, marshy wet meadow at north end and east side of lake. Wide, muddy beach along west side to south end of lake. Forest edge. Mixed conifer forest including pine, Aspen. Shrubby willows, huckleberry and Douglas Spirea. Grassy meadow with asters, gentian and lady’s tresses blooming. So many froglets and toadlets I had to watch where I stepped. Lots of Yellow Jackets.
