Whitened Flasher
Astraptes creteus

Observation date: August 20, 2022
Submitted by: Paul Prappas
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This is not an easy one to vet based on the photos. No white markings on the dorsal side, and the patch of white on the VFW is hidden behind the HW. The only ventral mark that helps support this ID are the two faints white dots along the trailing edge of the HW. Other than these dots, this speces has a plain ventral HW. No significant white other than the ventral FW, which is concealed.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Very little in the way of barring or white patches on this Flasher, which rules out most candidates. The dark pattern on the dorsal FWs does match up perfectly for "creteus". And the two white spots at the lower rear of the HW also support "creteus" or Whitened Flasher. "cretatus" also matches up well, but BOA doesn't list it for Panama. There should also be some white on the inner vental FW. Problem is, the HW is concealing that area. That said, this fits "creteus" very well.
