Observation date: November 04, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Individual buckeye, avoiding cold wind by selecting a sunlit site on a litter mat behind coyote willow shrubs and beneath a large cottonwood tree on which to perch. This individual provides another example of extended, orange-colored patterns along the hindwing borders and on the forewing tip (this individual exhibits orange-colored extensions bordered by cream/tan-colored patterns). The ventral wing has a light pinkish color but was difficult to photograph well. It is larger than dark buckeyes that are also present in low numbers along the Rio Grande. The afternoon was generally cool, windy, and partly cloudy.
