Carolina sphinx
Manduca sexta

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This large moth was observed sleeping on a tree trunk on a very warm day in the Bookcliff Campground at Highline State Park just north of Loma, Colorado. It was between 2 1/2 and 3 inches long ( slightly longer than my pinky finger, which was the only measure I had at the time to use for approximation). Unfortunately I didn't get to see it leave, so I don't know what its full wing span looked like. I've looked at several types of moths, and haven't been able to find anything that matches the size, location, pattern, and way it rested. Its antennae are very difficult to see, but on a hi-res photo zoomed in tightly, they appear to be slender, hairy like the visible portion of the body, and are tucked close against the side and under the shoulders of the wings.
