Eastern Comma
Polygonia comma

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It looks like this butterfly was attracted by some rising sap from the stump of a Silver Maple tree. It found the sap. I'm not sure if it fed on it. The tree was cut in December 2022 because it was slowly dying. The crown and top most branches were dead, being leafless in the summer. The cut tree exposed a hole in the center of the trunk. To my surprise there was bark covering the center. The diameter of the hole is quite significant.
