Western Tiger Swallowtail
Papilio rutulus

Observation date: April 16, 2023
Submitted by: Tra_naturehikes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was a beautiful, sunny day in the 60’s, close to a creek that is rushing with water… uncharacteristically, due to recent rainstorms and snow in the nearby mountains. This beauty was alone and actively pollinating the purple flower it is photographed with. I don’t recall seeing this type of butterfly, that I first mistook as a monarch- the larger size stood out to me. Just gorgeous!
