Common Emerald
Hemithea aestivaria

Observation date: June 28, 2023

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Moth was seen in the morning (warm & sunny weather, about 78 degrees F), sunning on leaf, with its wings extended, dorsal side up, flat against the leaf. Maximum wingspread was less than an inch. When a few shadows streaked over the moth, it suddenly lifted its entire body (maintaining the spread-wing flat position), and "danced" in a clockwise circle, while at the same time doing rapid "push ups!" Then it moved to another adjacent leaf, where it "pasted" itself again (wings spread) against the leaf. The moth stayed in that position all day. The next morning, the moth was gone.
