Mountain Mahogany Hairstreak
Satyrium tetra

Observation date: June 23, 2023
Submitted by: ezeemonee
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Partly cloudy day in the low 70’s F. ID cue is the chocolate brown top side color. By location this should be the elusive subspecies Fumosum. AKA the Santa Monica Mountains Hairstreak butterfly. Coast Live Oak host plants with new leaf growth growing in the area. I think I saw a female on one of the oak trees. When disturbed it flew up to the top of the tree canopy.

Coordinator notes: Based on the large stigma on the forewing and hindwing shape of those wings, it looks more like tetra-Ken Davenport
