Observation notes: Seen midway up the Way Up Trail in Elfin Forest Preserve. This trail climbs the north-facing slope of the hills, but is now in full sun for hours. The Sages and Buckwheat are in heavy fresh flower, associated Lemonadeberry provides good perching sites overlooking the the trail itself. This individual was so strongly and distinctively patterned, at first I thought it was something else. But other individuals of this species were in the area. Leaf shadows impact the view of the wings.
