Observation notes: noticed a large dark "skipper" on the marigolds in backyard. unusually hot July. highs in the hundreds, still windy. It was wary but let me get close as long as I moved slowly. Beautiful dark and intricate wing patterns, metallic bronze in flashing in the sunlight. flitted between the marigolds and the butterfly bush.

Coordinator notes: I looked at this for some time...Erynnis sp. are notoriously difficult to differentiate from each other and I still think it's possible this is E. horatius. I won't be surprised if a more knowledgeable coordinator corrects me on this one.
