Observation notes: this caterpillar dropped near me from the top of a cherry tree. It is the only tree in the vicinity so it had to have been on that tree. Interestingly, the red blotches very nearly imitated the mottling on the leaves of this cherry tree which made it very well hidden when in the tree. There is discussion in Wagner of the possibility that these blotchy red markings maybe able to be controlled based on the surroundings or the later season caterpillars to match the tree. Interesting!!! This one certainly seems to put credence to that.
