Observation notes: On rocks in the stream of the East Fork of Mimbres River which was running, but it's a creek you can step across in two steps right now. The river is surrounded by a narrow band of ponderosa pine forest with hills above covered in pinon and shrubs. Recently affected by both fire and floods. The location is about half a mile south of the point where McKnight Canyon Trail drops to the river. There is no trail leading to it.
