Northern Pearly-eye
Enodia anthedon

Observation date: August 09, 2023
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Lighting isn't great, so I had to lighten the shadows. I am assuming this is the Northern Pearly-eye and not the Creole, as I'm not sure Creole would be in this type of forest and I'm not sure the wings are pointed enough (I've never seen a Creole). However, it looks like there could be five spots on the forewing - would that rule out Northern? Or is that not actually a fifth spot that's mostly hidden?

Coordinator notes: The biggest factor in determining between the Southern & Northern Pearly Eye are the antennae clubs. In the Southern Pearly Eye the clubs are gold. The Northern Pearly Eye may have some gold on clubs but also black as your pictured specimen has. Creole has more smooth tiger stripes on hindwing than the others, others have pointed disruptions in stripes toward spots. So I'm confident this is Enodia anthedon. Thank you! JAMES STEEN
