Observation notes: I was conducting woodpecker surveys in Beltrami Island state Forest, Roseau County and saw this butterfly. I had never seen one like this before so took a photo and keyed it out. I confirmed the ID with a friend who is a lepidopterist and he confirmed my ID.

Coordinator notes: Nice find! Correct, primarily a western species, there is a separate population that can be found across the far reaches of Northern MN, southern Manitoba, southern Ontario along the shores of Lake Superior, and Isle Royale NP. -jmgesell
