Observation notes: This morning my wife and I headed out in search of "Monarchs and Milkweeds" for the Journey North 2023 Blitz.* Our plan was to visit various locations in the Bellefonte and State College area where we know there are numerous Milkweeds, and where in the past we have occasionally spotted Monarch Butterflies. (Sadly, in recent weeks, we have seen very few Monarch Butterflies and no Eggs, Caterpillars, or Frass as evidence of their presence at home and elsewhere. We hope today’s search will be more productive.) Over the course of the day we spotted at least one butterfly in each of four different locations. Because the locations (stretching from Bellefonte to State College, PA) are different, I am going to treat each as a separate BAMONA Butterfly report. This, the first, is in the field above an underground gas pipeline that goes by the First Baptist Church on Jacksonville Road east of Bellefonte. Here we found several Common Milkweeds, and eventually at least two different Monarch Butterflies fluttering about. At about 11:30 AM (EDT) the air temperature was 79°F, the air pressure was 28.65 inches, the dew point was 64°F, the humidity was 61%, with a light 7 mph breeze blowing from the southwest under partly cloudy skies. LATITUDE: 40.929° LONGITUDE: -77.752° - Tim * FYI, you can view our Journey North report for this sighting at: https://journeynorth.org/sightings/query_result.html?record_id=1526645123
