Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: February 13, 2020
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This butterfly laid claim to a small glade, dominated by Lemonadeberry (rhus) and over-arching Eucalyptus trees. I observed this individual multiple days in the same area. Doing very little patrolling; instead sunning itself on the Eucalyptus bark or nearby Agave plants, both of which had nice broad flat surfaces so the butterfly could hang there open-winged. It was clear and cool. Alone for the time being, he might be challenged by Monarchs or even a Red Admiral, all of which seemed to overwinter that year.
