Pearl Crescent
Phyciodes tharos

Observation date: August 26, 2023
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This one is confusing me. The Pearl Crescent is pretty much always what I see in this area, but this one doesn't strike me as one; but I know they can vary. Its underwings look more like Silvery Checkerspot or even Phaon Crescent, to be honest, but I don't think the Phaon should be found here. (Also, I don't know that there's enough of the creamy stripe/spots that the Phaon has). The few times it opened its wings, it held them strangely, like seen in this picture - not like what the Pearl Crescents always tend to do.

Coordinator notes: You were leaning toward P. tharos and correct. The underside of P. tharos and P. pharon are similar for sure. But that lack of the light or creamy color bars on forewings say this is P. tharos. Thank you! JAMES STEEN
