Observation notes: I saw it at midday on the trail in Upper Water Canyon, Los Alamos County, NM, about 1/4 mile from the parking area. It was flitting about the few asters near the trail. There are both aspens and ponderosa along that part of the trail. I could not see its underside nor get a photo of it. It had a piece of one hind wing missing. I have consulted both Butterflies of NM on PEEC and my copy of Glassberg's "Swift Guide to Butterflies" pg. 214 to make my guess as to identity.
