Observation notes: Seen in the riparian area, guarding a stretch of open trail near two tire-rut ponds. Sage, Sunflower and other chapparal plants predominate. The ground in the area was damp to saturated in places. Weather was clear and warm. There was a Mourning Cloak nearby also guarding a stretch of trail where Sycamore trees and larger Lemonadeberry bushes predominate, but the two did not interact. The Buckeye's wings showed only minor damage, implying it is an "early" individual rather than a late holdover from the previous season.
