Juniper Hairstreak
Callophrys gryneus

Observation date: March 11, 2024
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Hairstreak (1 of 2 observed this day) becoming prey to an ornate tree lizard, while taking nutrients from moist sand in Sotol Creek, along the Pine Tree Trail, near the Aquirre Springs Campground of the east-facing Organ Mountains. Many OTLs were actively hunting for flies, beeflies, bees, and moths/butterflies, perching on warm rocks then stalking and running rapidly to grab prey individuals. The afternoon was warm, with light wind, and under a mostly sunny sky.
