Observation notes: Spotted one, possibly two individuals on a section of narrow trail running adjacent to a low ridge in chaparral. Spring overgrowth was dense. This is an area I expect to see lots of Blues and some Metalmarks. The Blues were (again) a no-show, but this guy showed up. Very active, but I was able to follow its zig-zag movements and caught up to it when it perched. These Metalmarks vary greatly in their flying style, sometimes slow and fluttery, sometimes zippy like a Skipper. They appear dark in flight, but almost always rest wings open. Day was mild and mostly sunny. (Another rattlesnake in the trail on this day. This is getting weird. Maybe I should be watch snakes, since there are hardly any butterflies this season.)
