Saltbush Sootywing
Hesperopsis alpheus

Observation date: May 17, 2024
Submitted by: Robert Gorman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Highway 168 near Nevada on sunny hot day most worn and we covered a large area for 3 or more hours finding only a hand full. Most flush and fly away or hide deep in a bush when they have lost you. This Will Be another lifer if its saltbush sootywing And if McNeal Sooty is not a sub species. Not sure if that is something that has been settled? also saw some other butterflies that I will post. Diane found the first one and by that time I was just about ready to call it quits. Very Difficult to find and really hard to get them to sit still. Ended up being a great day. Swallow tail looked like anise or desert black. White checkered skipper, Common Branded, Alma, Acmon, Painted lady, White Checkered skipper. Very few species and very few of any of them. A Blue that is probably Bauer's will post it next. High eighties to low nineties mostly Clear a few Clouds. Hard rain when we got to the squeeze that did not last long.
