Lupine Blue
Plebejus lupini

Observation date: June 01, 2024
Submitted by: camflies
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This butterfly was perched on various low plants near the trail up the hill across from Chuchupate Campground. I did not notice E. umbellatum or fasciculatum in the immediate area, but am guessing chlorina based on elevation.

Coordinator notes: Both Icaricia (Plebejus) monticola and chlorina are in this area. Neither is really a Lupine Blue. The host for chlorina is on the road cut along Lockwood Rd. near the entrance to the Frazier Mountain Rd. My guess is that this is monticola butI can't be sure. The host for chlorina does occur up a bit hgher in a canyon where the road switch backs. The stronghold for chlorina is on Mt. Pinos near the McGill Campground in late June and July. Bamona has not yet accepted monticola and chlorina are species and I am going to guess this individual is a monticola based on the date as chlorina flies a bit later than monticola in this area.-Ken Davenport
