Gold-hunter's Hairstreak
Satyrium auretorum
Observation date: June 08, 2024
Submitted by: Robert Gorman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: With short flights from flower to flower you could see gray topside, also in first photo clearly you can see topside as this species hairstreaks rub there tail wings together to attract predator to the tail end allowing the butterfly to escape. You can see the gray upper side at the tail in this first shot. Also from rubbing the wings back and forth there is a lot of gray material from scales coming off the hind wing onto the fore wing leaving a gray coating of dust on the front wing. Note the scent gland on leading edge of fore wing showing this is a male also the females have a longer tail this one is very short. Note also the very bright orange mark above the tail area in second two shots. This is a very new male and we were very lucky it stuck around and sipped nectar for a very long time. Most of the time it was low down in the flowers impossible to get a photo of. Hope you had a great vacation and recharged your batteries. I'm sure you got a good work out!
