Observation notes: These are poor photos...very out of focus. The colors do come through, but I'm not sure it's enough for an ID. I see that males gravitate to canyons and gulches; this was on the mesa top right where the grassland transitioned to ponderosa/locust--near the edge of the mesa itself. To my eye, the closed-wing coloration was gray with white fringe and the head was noticeably orange--most intensely on its "neck..." just behind the eyes. It would be the right time of year for this species, and I'm giving it my best guess.
