Anicia Checkerspot
Euphydryas anicia

Observation date: June 17, 2024
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Many flying around today in this area of sagebrush and dry hillsides. Many legumes and other wildflower species, some clumps of aspen very spread out. I'm afraid I don't know how to distinguish between these checkerspots; they seem very similar to me in appearance, especially given possible variability in both.

Coordinator notes: The correct species is anicia...there are redder ones (and with yellow)...eurytion...and dominately black and white ones as in your photo (rorina). In that area, some of us think these are two different species flying in the same area but they evidently are not reproductively isolated and interbreed yet don't produce a lot of inbetween looking individuals. The last individual in your photos is a little redder than the top one (both are males). Mike
