Zebra Swallowtail
Neographium marcellus

Observation date: June 21, 2024
Submitted by: Laughingmantis
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: After 4 years of growing pawpaws (and literally 5 minutes after telling my wife “I wish more butterflies would show up”) this zebra swallowtail appeared out of nowhere and started laying eggs on at least 4 of our little trees! First one I’ve ever seen! It was only later that I learned they had been extirpated from Pittsburgh for near a century, or so I’ve been told.
