White-veined Arctic
Oeneis bore

Observation date: June 22, 2024
Submitted by: John Gibbons
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The 1st photo shows 2 individuals with one atop the other. Note the brown spread wing on the bottom one. The 1st one flew away (top one, I believe) and the other stayed for a couple of minutes with wings held tightly upright (photo 2...strongly backlit but other side was partially covered by tuft of grass). 3rd photo, added later, is partially obstructed by grass. I do not have the experience or knowledge to make the id but a look at field guides leads me to think about the possibility of White-veined Arctic? I have more photos but they all look pretty much alike as the butterflies did not move except to fly away.

Coordinator notes: I'm sure this is Oeneis bore, the White-veined Arctic. If correct, I believe it's the first known sighting in the province. I hope other coordinators will look at this sighting as well. JRains
