Observation notes: My son found these all over our trampoline on the evening of June 30th, after some late afternoon rainstorms. I had never seen anything quite like it before. I did some looking around on the web, and decided this moth looked most like one of two moths: the giant leopard moth, or the salt marsh moth. I decided that it looked more like the giant leopard moth due to all photos of the salt marsh moth lacking black spots on the thorax/head area. I'm unsure of this identification, however. Mostly due to us being located in SW Montana, and this being far outside it's typical range. If this identification is in error, I would love to know what it is. My 5 year old son is fascinated by insects of all kinds, and loves to know all about each one he finds.
