Observation notes: This butterfly was observed along the Pelican Nature Trail of the San Joaquin River National Wildlife Refuge in California. It is foraging on what appears to be coyote bush (Baccharis pilularis). It was a bright sunny morning, with temperatures already in the mid-80s (on the way to 110 deg. that day). The photographer does not know what kind of butterfly it is and reached out to me. I am the park ranger of the San Luis NWR Complex and use this site frequently for environmental education and outreach to visitors of the wildlife refuge.
