Dorcas Copper
Lycaena dorcas

Observation date: July 09, 2024
Submitted by: John Gibbons
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: First for 2024. Annual at this location. Shrubby Cinquefoil not yet in bloom; I saw only 2 -3 flowers. I need help to clear up my confusion with Coppers.. My field guides do not place Dorcas in NW NL. Yet the only Coppers I find here seem to be Dorcas and in past years, they have been confirmed as such. Are they indeed all Dorcas? Should I look for any other species of Copper in this area? Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Coordinator notes: BAMONA has a few other sightings in NW Newfoundland; at least three sightings north of Port au Choix, so I'm not surprised to see this. My friend Jeff Gesell has identified a number of sightings in your area. And this is definitely Lycaena dorcas. Various cinquefoil sp. are the caterpillar hosts, so your sighting makes sense on that level, too. I always take the ranges in field guides with a grain of salt; better to check on BAMONA or iNaturalist for recent sighting data. Nice photo. JRains
