Mallow Scrub-Hairstreak
Strymon istapa

Observation date: July 16, 2024
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Several individuals seen, in association with other Hairstreak sp., and other butterflies nectaring in the Alkali Heliotrope blossoms, and in isolated locations in Mallow, Buckwheat, and Doveweed, all of which is plentiful in the meadow/open grassland areas of the lower Los Penasquitos Preserve. Behavior seemed fairly typical for patrolling Hairstreak males when in isolation but when nectaring they seemed unconcerned with the presence of other butterflies. Bees and wasps seem to interact with them, chasing them off Alkali Heliotrope blossoms occasionally. Weather was fair, warm and slightly breezy.
