Pipevine Swallowtail
Battus philenor

Observation date: July 23, 2024
Submitted by: butterflybeulah
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was huge and I thought it was a hummingbird at first. I have a video but don't know if I can submit that so adding screenshots from it.
Status: Resident
Verified by: James Steen

Coordinator notes: You did photograph a swallowtail, but not a Black Swallowtail but a Pipevine Swallowtail, an uncommon sighting as compared to the Black Swallowtail for NE Kansas. I believe it would be considered a resident rather than a stray as pipevine does grow naturally in NE Kansas. Great sighting! Thanks, JAMES STEEN
