Woodland Skipper
Ochlodes sylvanoides

Observation date: July 30, 2024
Submitted by: topper72
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Mostly cloudy, little breeze, temp in low 80s degrees F. A couple seen playing follow the leader with brief stops on fleabane. I was hoping for a decent dorsal shot as the pair moved off towards a small cluster of bee balm. As I approached I saw one of them fluttering quickly as in showing interest in a suitor. But, on closer examination it had been caught in a spider web and the orb-weaver spider quickly sprang into action. A quick bite near the skipper's head stopped the fluttering and the spider made quick work of wrapping up its prey like a mummy. During the chaos, I was able to get a dorsal shot of the skipper.
