Colorado Hairstreak
Hypaurotis crysalus

Observation date: August 13, 2024

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Mostly cloudy, very little breeze, temp in low 70s F. Finally found a couple of these! Cloudy until I left the vehicle. Two seen on sun-facing side of mature Gambel oak stand basking on oak leaves ~12 inches from each other. One flew away quickly with no decent shots obtained. After a couple of minutes, the other one crawled out of the sun under the leaves but stayed on it's branch in and out of the sun for ~ 25 minutes = lots of photos! Very hard to see when it was not in the sun. No dorsal side presented.

Coordinator notes: that's a huge investment of time! I find the morning warm-up to be the best time to get dorsal photos. of course, a cloudy day can mess up the plan!
