Hera buckmoth
Hemileuca hera

Observation date: August 14, 2024
Submitted by: syaeger
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in a lake, so I took it to shore to dry off. Its wings were around 2 inches wide. The weather was sunny, mid to high 80s, and windy, which is how i assume it ended up in the water.

Coordinator notes: Really interesting sighting. I would consider this to be H. magnifica, a sub-species not yet recognized here at BAMONA; I'm not quite sure where we stand on this. I found this taxonomy note in MPG: Hemileuca magnifica (Rotger, 1948) is treated as a subspecies of 7741 Hemileuca hera in Pohl et al. (2016) following Tuskes et al. (1996). This taxon continues to be treated as full species by some authors. Thanks for submitting it. JRains
