Observation notes: My favorite butterfly to watch and photograph. There were a dozen of these butterflies here, most of them nectaring on thistle with a little chasing and patrolling. The one most interesting butterfly to watch was ovipositing in crunchy, dry leaf litter along the road. She was crawling around ovipositing in a sunny patch of western bleeding heart that has seen better days. Patch of bleeding heart was so eaten down it was almost unrecognizable. Must be where all the Clodius I was watching came from. This patch of bleeding heart is shaded in the afternoon. Habitat is a stream and small roadside waterfall, a granite wall with nooks, crannies and mossy seeps. Woods along the road and top of the cliff are mixed deciduous and conifer the understory is mixed native shrubs and perennials. Sunny in the morning, shady in the afternoon.
