'Astyanax' Red-spotted Purple
Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Observation date: August 15, 2024
Submitted by: scream of the b...
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Possible hybrid? Never seen a RSP look like this before.

Coordinator notes: I don't believe it's a hybrid of the two. Normally the hybrids are much more striking, especially the undersides. The change in shading of outer forewing tip is not unusual in Red-Spotted Purple populations, some variations occur. I did a search of dozens and this color change was occurring but is probably simply a more uncommon color variable in species. Some will even sport more visible red spots on outer forewings. When I first viewed your pics I thought possibly same thing as you did. Thanks, JAMES STEEN
