Mallow Scrub-Hairstreak
Strymon istapa

Observation date: August 24, 2024
Submitted by: Zencoyote
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Three individuals seen nectaring on small clumps of Heliotrope, in the backbay area of the San Elijo estuary, just outside of the preserve boundary. Also present today, Lorquin’s Admiral, Tiger Swallowtail, Monarch, Marine Blue, and other Hairstreaks. This species has been a regular presence here throughout its expected seasonal range so far, with the right environment including larval food plant. Time will tell, but it gives every indication of being a resident. Weather breezy, mild, with filmy skies.
