Western White
Pontia occidentalis

Observation date: July 06, 2021
Submitted by: Buddy Mays
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Photographed in a marshy area about 20 miles east of Bend, Oregon, at Rimrock Springs in the juniper-dotted Crooked River Grasslands and high desert of central Oregon. Clear, hot, July day.
Status: Resident
Verified by: John Calhoun
Verified date: October 07, 2024
Coordinator notes: This individual could be a Common Checkered White but I can't rule out a Western White. I have seen Checkered Whites outside the range of Western Whites that resemble them, but we know they are 2 different species.-Ken Davenport. --I would say this is a Western, based on the more extensive gray marginal markings above. Male Checkered whites tend to have less marginal and postmedian spotting (i.e., the forewings look more unmarked white). J. Calhoun
