Green Comma
Polygonia faunus

Observation date: September 03, 2024
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The first two photos are the same individual; the underside seems more Gray-like to me, but it seems the spotting on the upperside is too large/evident for it to be Gray? So Green seemed closest to me.

Coordinator notes: Your unsure ID is correct...sometimes you can confuse the Green Comma with the Hoary Comma but the former is usually well patterned (rather mottled) looking on the underside (except for some females that may be uniformly plain gray (form orpheus or silvius) but the upperside of the hindwings is diagnostic...in the mountains it is the only species with the spots entirely within the dark wing border (this is also true of the Comma but would be found only in eastern Colorado, and the Gray Comma which has tiny spots).
