California Tortoiseshell
Nymphalis californica

Observation date: September 10, 2024
Submitted by: sandyleapt
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Marys Peak, Parker Creek Falls asphalt parking pad. There is some moisture being held in the asphalt because it rained a bit on 09/09/2024. This butterfly flew in and landed on the asphalt parking pad and folded its wings. Hoping it was a butterfly I photographed earlier I moved around the butterfly for good lighting. The butterfly followed my movement and turned to face me. It opened and closed its wings a few times. Eventually I got the light angle I wanted and got a few photos. Compare this butterfly to the butterfly I think might be a Compton Tortoiseshell. Could be both butterflies are California Tortoiseshells.
