Goatweed Leafwing
Anaea andria

Observation date: September 13, 2024
Submitted by: Janet Ruth
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Landed on a cholla in my yard while I was pruning, but then flew up into a cottonwood where it perched for quite a long time so that I first got iPhone pics and then went in and got my "good camera." Weather - sunny and quite warm; had noticed quite a few butterflies moving about. Note: I wanted it to be a Tropical Leafwing given how sharp the pattern was on the underwings, but the margin seems smooth rather than wavy, the tail is short. Got a glimpse of the orange upper wings but it was so quick that I couldn't see if there was a dark margin.
