Observation notes: I think there were two separate individuals on the rabbitbrush. One was pretty torn up.

Coordinator notes: Your suggest ID of this distinctive butterfly is correct...looks like a male (top photo) and a female (bottom photo). Eastern Colorado usually get bachmannii, the eastern United States subspecies (larvata in the West). A few usually make it into the state if the late season lasts long enough. If a female arrives early enough in the year and finds some hackberry to lay eggs, some locally-grown ones might be found in July-August but most are late season strays...as these that arrive in late August through Sept.
