Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Nectaring at Ericameria nauseosa. Mostly keys out to J. grisea except for a significantly larger orange sub-marginal band on the dorsal hindwing and just a smidge more orange within the pinkish-tan band encircling the large FW eyespot. But certainly open to other thoughts. See https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/246020361

Coordinator notes: I agree this an interesting area for buckeyes. They are notorious drainage-bottom patrollers and this particular drainage links to the Mississippi rather than Rio Grande. I can't argue with your ID, though I think it fair to say there is overlap in wing characters with coenia and also no barriers to hybridization between Gray and Common. So an ID of a photograph is not particularly definitive. nice images. thanks for posting!
