Observation notes: It was a cloudy, cold, and humid day. This was the only butterfly seen in two hours of hiking around Cherry Canyon. It rested on the ground for half a minute before flying away.

Coordinator notes: Thanks for sending specific date and locality, very important is determining members of this complex. Apodemia mejicanus deserti occurs in eastern LA County, Apodemia mormo cythera occurs in LA County late summer-fall. Apodemia virgulti virgulti is correct for your photo! Deserti has very blackish hindwing. Cythera tends to be paler.
