Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: April 04, 2011

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in Palm Springs California early evening on the side of a building. It seemed undisturbed when we were viewing it and taking photos. When first found it had its enormous wings closed but opened them up to give us a beautiful show. I have never seen a moth this size before and when asking the locals what it was no one had any idea. Luckily I found your site on the web. It was a warm, comfortable evening, but not sure of the exact temperature, and dry with a slight breeze blowing.
Status: Nonresident

Coordinator notes: This is a state record, as far as I can determine. It is too fresh to come from anything but a cocoon very recently, but has no breeding area as far as is known within many hundreds of miles.
