Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: June 07, 2011
Submitted by: Karen Farberow
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I kept seeing them in my back yard, the single one is on our vinyl fence, then i read up on them and found out they eat our Chinese Elm tree sap. I looked up and saw some twig that was brown and wirey, looked closer and saw the cluster of them. Neat but a tad creepy. They are starting to hang under our house eves getting ready to transform. We live in Long Beach California and the weather is in the 70's. This is exciting for us.
