California Sister
Adelpha californica

Observation date: September 30, 2011
Submitted by: shakespearenut
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was such a beautiful day at the Monrovia Canyon. In the high 70s. I tried, in vain, to take a picture of this butterfly, but handling my toddler and my camera at once proved too difficult! I am sure this is the butterfly I saw. I was very captivated by it because it was medium-large, and had beautiful white spots against the brown and a distinctive orange dot on the wing tip. We were visiting the waterfall at the end of the trail, and there are plenty of oak trees there. A patient search on the internet of California butterfly images helped me identify this one. NOTE: The accompanying picture is from the BAMONA website. I couldn't submit my sighting w/out a photograph. I won't get my feelings hurt if you don't accept this one, but just had to share what I saw. I am now so much more aware of butterflies when I am out. :-)

Coordinator notes: The butterfly in question is common in places like the one you describe and you convinced me that is what you observed. California Sisters patrol canyons in oak woodland and visit mud along streams below waterfalls.
